PUSSY.

Not everything in life is pussy. But everything in life is pussy.

Can we use our pussies as a tool to defy the current world order? It’s 2018, and pussy is still a central site of discrimination against women – whether through child-bearing and motherhood or through presenting the feminine as sexual objects/subjects, or other means. Have a pussy and you will inevitably experience discrimination. This in mind, this performance asks: should we centralize our pussies and utilize them to form a resistance? Or perhaps we should de-centralize our pussies in resistance, in hopes that this de-centralization would decrease the level through which we’re essentialized as women?

The performance is structured around a series of texts (in english) which follow a question: can we use our pussies as a daily tool of resistance to defy structural patriarchal oppression? The text strings together an intersectional number of themes: abortion, the right not to have kids, conflating and reflecting on sex work vs. sexual labor in art-work, using children as demographic warfare, comparing preganancy as a state of exception with the state of exception in palestine-israel during the second intifada, the meeting point between dark rooms and histories of migration, and more. This unlikely culmination of themes are discussed through a biographical, intimate and introspective lense. It is their intimate and reflective nature and unlikely intersection that makes them accessible to the audience.

Juxtaposed with the texts is the presence naked body, which fashions itself as an exaggerated grotesque caricature of femininity and feminine heteronormative sexuality. In order to abstain from replicating the predisposition of women as sexual objects, subjects, wombs or mothers, or from any role based on having a pussy, the score for the body opts for actions using the pussy in a frivolous and useless manner. The result is a physical performance that appears at times circus-like, at times appears painful, and acts to reveal a modest and introspective nature that contradicts preconceived notions of what a naked feminine body would present as in a performance titled “PUSSY”. more often than not, the body-based performance acts as a mediation tool for the audience to access the intimate-yet-complex texts, and to experience nudity and pussy outside of the limitations of the male gaze. Inspired by Carolee Schneemann’s ‘Interior Scroll’ and by thai ping pong shows, the presentation mashes up choreography, lipstick, live music, serving in drag, and of course – pussy.
